One address, four good reasons

Bar, restaurant, rooftop and rooms in central Launceston

Star Bar is a bar, restaurant, rooftop and hotel at 113 Charles Street in the centre of Launceston. The building has stood here since 1828. We open for coffee, we pour through the afternoon, we cook modern Tasmanian food, and on the weekend the music runs late.

It is one of those places a town keeps. Locals have been meeting under this roof for the better part of two centuries: after work, before the show, on a first date, on the last night of a trip. The fit-out has changed more than once. The habit has not.

Since 1828

Older than most of the country

The Star Bar building was raised in 1828 out of convict brick, when Launceston was twenty-two years old and Tasmania was still called Van Diemen's Land.

It has been a landmark on Charles Street ever since. The heritage listed facade you walk through is the same one that has been watching the street for close to two hundred years, and the brick behind the plaster was laid by hand by people who never saw electric light.

In 1991 the building was reopened after a full restoration, and the first pizza came out of an Italian wood-fired oven brought in for the occasion. That oven is still lit.
