one old building
The building went up in 1828 and took its liquor licence in 1838, and it has held one without a break ever since. The one on the roof is a much newer idea, and just as good.
Downstairs
The Bar
The main bar at Star Bar is open seven days a week and 365 days a year, from 11am until late. It is walk-in, no booking needed, and it serves Tasmanian beer, wine and spirits alongside the full kitchen menu.
Northern Tasmania makes more good drink than a state this size has any right to, so the taps and the back bar lean local: Aussie Beer, cool-climate wine from up the river, and Tasmanian whisky and gin that people fly here for.

Upstairs
The Rooftop
The rooftop bar at Star Bar sits above the brick line with an open view over central Launceston. It is the venue's best seat in the hour before dark, and it can be booked out for functions.
Launceston is a city in a bowl, ringed by hills, which means the evening light comes in low and sideways and lands on everything for about 40 minutes. From up here you get all of it.

How the bar works
- Getting in
- No booking, no door list, no dress code. Come as you are.
- Under 18
- Welcome with a parent/guardian, or in the dining areas during meal service, under Tasmanian liquor licensing rules.
- ID
- Bring photo ID if you look under 25. Australian law, not our idea.
- Groups
- Small groups walk in. More than about ten, give us a call first.
- Payment
- Cash, EFTPOS and all major cards.
